The South West Dufferin Police Services Board is one of the four OPP detachment boards in Dufferin County following the Ministry’s consolidation of Dufferin OPP detachment boards from eight to four under O.Reg. 135/24 of the Community Safety & Policing Act, 2019.
With this consolidation, Grand Valley, Amaranth and East Garafraxa has joined together to form the South West Dufferin Police Services Board.
Police Service Boards oversee how policing is provided in their local community. They contribute to their community’s safety and well-being by working with local citizens and organizations to make sure their community receives the appropriate police services.
Appointees to O.P.P. Detachment Boards should be active members of their community with a general knowledge of O.P.P. Detachment Board duties and responsibilities and awareness of community safety issues and programs within their local community.
Members must be residents of Ontario and cannot be a judge, justice of the peace, a member (past or present) of the OPP, a current member of any other police service in Ontario, a former member of any other police service in Ontario unless they have ceased to be a member for at least one year, a special constable or a First Nation Officer, a person who practices criminal law as a defence counsel or as a prosecutor, a director, officer or employee of a prescribed policing provider or any other prescribed persons.
Police Services Board Members must also be:
- at least eighteen (18) years old,
- a Canadian Citizen,
- a resident of the Town of Grand Valley, and
- not employed by the Board or the Municipality
- required to attend and participate in meetings of the Board (quarterly), prepared in advance for business discussions.
Members will be provided with training to prepare them for their role.
The Town of Grand Valley provides a $80 per meeting remuneration for public appointees to the Board.
